BROMLEY HOUSE PHOTOGRAPHIC HERITAGE CENTRE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
In 1841 Alfred Barber became the first commercial photographer in the East Midlands. He established his
business in the attic rooms of Bromley House and although his business lasted only a few months he had
established Bromley House as the home of photography in the region. After his departure a succession of
photographers used the same attic rooms for over 100 years.
The aim of the Development Project is to celebrate that heritage by assembling a collection of photographic
literature and ephemera and providing facilities and an environment that supports and encourages researchers
investigating early photography. Additional work will be undertaken to recreate the Victorian atmosphere of the
original studio.
The project team welcomes support and donations from all but especially from others interested in early
photography.
